What actually happened
The number was never really stable, which is the honest lesson here. Saturn passed Jupiter at 82 in 2019, then jumped to 145, and the 2025 haul of 128 tiny, potato-shaped objects a few kilometers across pushed it to 274. They were found by stacking many images from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope taken between 2019 and 2021 until the faint moving specks rose above the noise.
These are not the moons of a classroom diagram. They are irregular, captured fragments: probably shattered remains of larger moons that collided long ago, strewn in distant, tilted orbits. So the deeper update is conceptual: 'how many moons does a planet have' stopped being a fixed fact and became a function of how hard you look and where you draw the line on what counts. The one safe bet is that 274 will not be the last number either.
