Only two objects from beyond the solar system have ever been detected

TaughtInterstellar visitors are vanishingly rare. We have seen exactly two objects confirmed to come from beyond our solar system: 'Oumuamua in 2017 and comet Borisov in 2019. Catching a third is a someday hope.

NowOn 1 July 2025 the NASA-funded ATLAS survey spotted 3I/ATLAS, the third confirmed interstellar object, a comet on a wildly hyperbolic orbit that could only have come from another star system.

What actually happened

You can tell an interstellar object by its orbit: it is not looping around the Sun but tearing straight through on a path too fast and too open to be bound to it. 3I/ATLAS has the most extreme such orbit yet recorded, arriving at roughly 58 kilometers per second relative to the Sun. Unlike the cigar-shaped enigma 'Oumuamua, this one is plainly a comet, venting dust and gas, which let telescopes study material from another solar system directly.

The reason three now feels like a trend is new survey power. Instruments like ATLAS and the newly operating Vera Rubin Observatory sweep the whole sky repeatedly, so objects that would once have slipped by unseen now get caught. The teaching that we had only ever seen two, and might wait years for another, aged out within a single observing season, and astronomers now expect these visitors to become almost routine.
