The Higgs boson is hypothetical and may not exist

Not wrong, but our understanding became significantly more precise.

NowCERN announced the discovery of the Higgs boson on 4 July 2012. Peter Higgs and François Englert shared the Nobel Prize the following year.

What actually happened

The mechanism was proposed independently by several groups in 1964, and the particle it implied became the last missing piece of the Standard Model. Finding it took a 27-kilometer collider, thousands of physicists, and about three decades of work.

The ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider both reported a new boson at about 125 GeV in July 2012, each at five-sigma significance and, crucially, independently of each other. Subsequent measurements have matched Standard Model predictions closely. The 2013 Nobel Prize went to Higgs and Englert, and Robert Brout, who shared the original work with Englert, had died in 2011 and could not be included.

The irony is that the discovery closed the Standard Model without opening the door physicists hoped for. The theory is now complete and still cannot explain dark matter, dark energy, or gravity. If your textbook listed the Higgs as an open question, that specific question has an answer and the larger ones do not.
