A metal like gold cannot exist as a free-standing one-atom sheet

The old claim turned out to be wrong and was rejected by evidence.

TaughtTwo-dimensional materials are a carbon curiosity. Graphene works because graphite is already made of weakly bound sheets you can peel apart; a true metal like gold is a three-dimensional lattice and would simply clump up long before you reached a single free-standing atomic layer.

NowIn 2024 researchers at Linköping University made 'goldene': a free-standing sheet of gold exactly one atom thick, the first two-dimensional metal. Cornered into two dimensions, gold even stops behaving like a normal metal and takes on semiconductor-like properties.

What actually happened

The problem with a one-atom metal sheet was never that the physics forbade it but that metals refuse to hold the shape: their atoms are happiest packed in bulk and pull themselves into clumps rather than staying spread out. Graphene, by contrast, comes from graphite, a material already built from stacked one-atom sheets, so peeling one off is comparatively easy. No such layered starting point exists for gold.

The Linköping team got around this sideways. They started from a ceramic sandwich, titanium gold carbide, in which a single layer of gold is already trapped between titanium carbide layers, then chemically etched everything else away, borrowing a century-old Japanese reagent used in ornamental metalwork to stop the freed gold from clumping. What remained was goldene: a stable hexagonal sheet one atom thick.

Because its atoms are squeezed into a plane and bond to only six neighbours, goldene's electronic structure shifts and it behaves less like a conductor and more like a semiconductor, a reminder that a material's identity is set as much by its dimensionality as by which element it is. It is the first free-standing sheet of a true metal, and it opens a whole periodic table's worth of possible 2D metals that textbooks had ruled out.
