NowIn June 2022 the UN accepted the government's request to register the country's name in all languages as Türkiye, the Turkish spelling.
What actually happened
The government had used Türkiye domestically all along; the request was to stop the English exonym being used internationally. President Erdoğan's stated reasoning was that Türkiye best represents the culture and values of the Turkish nation, and Turkish officials noted pointedly that the English word is also a bird and a dictionary synonym for a failure.
The UN accepted the change immediately, since a country's right to name itself is well established, and NATO and the EU followed. Media adoption has been gradual and inconsistent, and the diacritic on the ü makes it awkward in some systems, so you see Turkiye and Türkiye both. This is one of the most recent map changes on this site: if you graduated in 2022 or earlier, the country's official name in English changed after you left school.
