The oldest cave art, and the oldest storytelling, is European

What actually happened

The Europe-first story had already been eroding, as earlier work on Sulawesi and Borneo pushed Indonesian art past 40,000 years. The 2024 Nature paper went further by combining an older-than-expected date with something new: a composition. This is not a single animal on a wall but a scene, multiple figures apparently interacting, which archaeologists read as a story being told.

The date came from a refined technique, laser-ablation uranium-series imaging, which vaporizes microscopic samples of the calcite crust over the painting and maps the ages precisely, correcting older bulk methods that had underestimated the age. A neighboring hunting scene at another Sulawesi cave was re-dated to at least 48,000 years by the same method.

The correction is twofold and it moves the center of gravity out of Europe. The oldest figurative art is Southeast Asian, not European, and the human impulse to tell stories in pictures is older than the famous French and Spanish caves by roughly ten thousand years. The version taught in most classrooms, that art's story begins on the walls of Ice Age Europe, is out of date.
