NowIn 2025, molecular analysis identified the near-complete 'Dragon Man' skull from Harbin, China, as Denisovan, giving the group its first face. Ancient proteins and DNA from the skull's tooth plaque tied the massive, heavy-browed cranium, at least 146,000 years old, to the Denisovan lineage.
What actually happened
Denisovans were defined in 2010 almost entirely from genetics: a finger bone and a couple of molars from Denisova Cave yielded a genome, but nothing that showed anatomy. For fifteen years the standard line in textbooks was that we knew Denisovans mainly as a DNA signal living on in modern Melanesian, Tibetan, and East Asian populations, with no idea what their bodies or faces looked like.
The Harbin skull had been a puzzle in parallel. Recovered decades ago and reportedly hidden in a well, it was announced in 2021 as a possible new species, Homo longi, with a broad face and enormous brow. A team led by Qiaomei Fu scraped fossilized plaque from its single remaining tooth and recovered both mitochondrial DNA and ancient proteins that matched Denisovans, resolving the two mysteries at once: the unplaced skull and the faceless lineage were the same thing.
The honest caveats are real, some researchers want more confirmation, and the species label Homo longi versus Denisovan is still argued, but the central update stands. The claim that we have no Denisovan skull is no longer true, and the first reconstructed Denisovan face, heavy-browed and wide, now exists in the scientific literature.
