The country is called Burma

What actually happened

This is the rare place name where using it is a political statement, which is why usage still splits. The junta that renamed the country in 1989 had seized power the previous year and killed thousands of protesters; opposition figures including Aung San Suu Kyi rejected the change as illegitimate, and the US and UK governments long continued to say Burma. The UN accepted Myanmar. Many outlets now use Myanmar as the neutral standard while noting the history.

The capital move in 2005 was stranger still. The government relocated from Yangon to Naypyidaw, a city built from nothing in the interior, and announced the move with almost no warning; civil servants were given days. Naypyidaw is roughly six times the area of New York City with a fraction of the population, and is best known for twenty-lane highways that are usually empty. If you graduated before 1989, both the country and its capital have different names, and the capital is in a different place.
