NowA February 2025 study in Nature Medicine found that human brains contain roughly a plastic spoon's worth of micro- and nanoplastics, far more than the liver or kidneys, and that the amount rose about 50% between 2016 and 2024. The barrier is not the seal it was assumed to be.
What actually happened
The researchers dissolved brain tissue from autopsies and measured the plastic left behind, finding several grams' worth of tiny fragments, concentrated well above levels in other organs. The likeliest explanation is that the smallest nanoplastics are so minute they ride along with the molecules the barrier does let through. That a material humans only started manufacturing in 1907 now shows up in measurable quantities in the organ we thought best defended is the unsettling part.
The honest limits: this measures accumulation, not harm. Brains of people who had dementia held three to five times more plastic, but that is a correlation, and dead tissue cannot tell you which came first. What the study does establish is narrower and firmer: the blunt reassurance that the brain is walled off from environmental particles was wrong. They get in.
