All bacteria are microscopic, invisible to the naked eye

The old claim turned out to be wrong and was rejected by evidence.

TaughtBacteria are single cells so small you need a microscope to see them: a few micrometres across, thousands of times below the threshold of human vision. That tininess is practically part of the definition of a bacterium.

NowIn 2022, scientists described Thiomargarita magnifica in Science: a bacterium whose single cells grow to a centimetre or more, the length of an eyelash, visible to the naked eye and pickable up with tweezers, some 5,000 times larger than a typical microbe.

What actually happened

The bacterium was found growing on sunken mangrove leaves in the shallows of Guadeloupe. For years its discoverer, Olivier Gros, was not even sure it was a bacterium; the filaments looked far too big. Genetic and microscopic analysis confirmed that each visible thread is a single cell, not a chain of many, blowing past the theoretical size limit textbooks assigned to bacterial cells.

It breaks a second rule too. A classic dividing line taught in biology is that bacteria keep their DNA loose in the cell while only eukaryotes wrap it in membranes. Thiomargarita magnifica packages its genetic material and ribosomes inside membrane-bound sacs the researchers named pepins, an organelle-like arrangement not supposed to exist in bacteria.

This is genuinely disproved, not merely refined: the flat claim that no bacterium is visible without a microscope is false. Most bacteria are still microscopic, and that remains the norm. But 'you need a microscope to see a bacterium' now has a living, centimetre-long exception you could spot across a table.
