A little added sugar in a baby's food is harmless

The core idea stands, but key numbers or details have changed.

TaughtThere was no official national advice for feeding children under two, so the working assumption was that a little sweetness (a spoon of sweetened yogurt, a flavored puree, a sip of juice) was fine for babies and toddlers.

NowThe 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released in December 2020, were the first edition ever to cover children from birth to 24 months, and they set a firm line: no added sugars at all for children under age 2.

What actually happened

For its first seven decades the federal dietary guidance simply started at age two, leaving the most formative eating years without national recommendations. The 2020 edition closed that gap, folding in infants and toddlers for the first time on the strength of a dedicated advisory review of the birth-to-24-months window.

The headline rule for that age group is zero added sugar, not 'go easy,' but none. The reasoning is twofold: added sugars crowd out the nutrient-dense calories a rapidly growing child actually needs, and early, repeated exposure to sweet flavors appears to shape a lasting preference for them. The guidelines also flag that most sweetened drinks and many baby-marketed baked goods push toddlers well past that line.

That is why this is an update rather than a debunking: nothing about a baby's biology changed, but for the first time there is an official, specific answer where there used to be only a shrug. The old assumption that a bit of sweetness is obviously fine is now contradicted by the first guidance ever written for that age.

Still standard through 2020, so anyone who finished school between 1950 and 2020 learned the earlier version.
